Action Potential/Ocean Wave

Upon receiving a stimulus, cells depolarize by allowing sodium ions (yellow-orange dots) to enter. This allows for an action potential to fire (wave), after which a cell repolarizes by allowing potassium ions (purple dots) to exit the cell. The colors for the sodium and potassium ions were chosen based on their color in a flame test. The background depicts neurons, an excitable cell type, firing action potentials.
