Fluorescence Recovery After Photobleaching is a technique used to view diffusion of molecules through tissue or cells. In this technique, the molecules of interest are tagged with fluorophores, and an area of interest is “blacked out” using a high intensity laser. The kinetics of diffusion of fluorophore-tagged molecules onto the blacked-out area can now be viewed by a microscope.
In this painting, the ocean depicts the various fluorescent tags used on molecules, and the blacked-out beach represents the photobleached area.
